Hagel Brings the Patriotism

Today the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a resolution denouncing the White House’s plan to escalate the war in Iraq by sending in 21,500 more troops. One of my favorite senators to watch, since the war began, has been Chuck Hagel, the senior Republican from Nebraska. Since 2003, he has been a steady voice of realism where Iraq has been involved.

Today he called out his colleagues for playing politics with the war. Think Progress has the video from C-Span 3 (or “the Trinity,” as C-Span fans like to call it).

Money quote:

When I hear, on both sides of this argument, impugning motives and patriotism to our country, not only is it offensive and disgusting but it debases the whole system of our country and who we are.

My goodness. Can’t we debate the most critical issue of our time, out front, in front of the American people?

They expect it.
